Painting on a Sunday Afternoon

I’m always looking for something creative to push myself and develop myself. One of my goals for this year was to work more on my creative side. My wife and I are huge fans of the Spectra Art Space. Last Valentines day we did a glass blowing class and made a couple of glass hearts.

Since then, my wife (Photo Thrive) has had two art shows at Spectra. They are always running really fun classes. I would highly recommend checking them out. It has been at least twenty years since I last painted on canvas. A few weeks ago, we got an email about the art for stress relief focusing on the Mandala Painting style.

I don’t fully understand the Mandala Painting technique, but it involves creating circles. It usually has a center circle, then patterns or organic shapes emitting from it. I gave myself three challenges. First, to only use circles for the entire piece. Second, to use my left hand (non-dominate hand) to paint it. I’ve been training myself for the past several years to be ambidextrous. I think I’ll talk about that in a future post. Third, to have fun without judging or comparing my work to others. During the entire time, we listened to meditative type music and chatted.

The entire experience was so relaxing. There were seven of us there, and we all created some amazing pieces. I had an amazing time and I am beyond happen with what I created. I can’t look at it without smiling and having a sense of accomplishment.
